David Joy is currently the Director of Derbyshire Sport (County Sports Partnership) and has been involved in the development of sport at the highest level in a wide variety of roles.
Following a successful teaching career he made the step into sports development as the Development Officer for English Volleyball and went on to become their Deputy Director three years later. Over a period of 13 years he was also Head Coach to the very successful Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball club, producing 11 England U20 and 3 England seniors players as the club won almost every title in the English game.
In the early 1990s he became Director of Team Scotland, and led this exciting national initiative to develop innovative and successful youth strategies within 13 Scottish governing bodies of sport, which linked governing bodies more closely with school structures and the work of local authorities.
In 1995 he was appointed as Head of Operations within Sports Coach UK where he was responsible for the management of Champion Coaching, the design and creation of Coaching for Teachers and for the work of the regional coach education programmes in England. Through this work gained a deep insight into the needs of coaches at a local level.
As Chief Executive of Scottish Athletics from 1998-2004, he led a modernisation process which resulted in fundamental improvement in all areas of the sport and most notably; the governance arrangements, membership structures and revenues, sponsorship and commercial activities, coaching and competition and the introduction of Jog Scotland - a major new health initiative with 10,000 members. During this time he was also Chair to the organising team which hosted the European Cross County Championships in Edinburgh in December 2003.
Since June 2005 he has been the Director of Derbyshire Sport - the county sports partnership in Derbyshire, following 18 months with Sport England West Midlands as Head of Policy and Strategy. Derbyshire Sport is one of the larger and more established county sports partnerships and David now manages team of twenty staff who work with the many partners who make up the partnership, to deliver the participation and performance targets within the county sport and active recreation plan.
In the past three years, in addition to these county duties, he worked as a consultant in designing the new Coaching Scotland Framework, which was acknowledged as laying a framework for the UK Coaching Framework. David was also a member of the Sports Coach UK strategic group, which helped to shape the new UK Coaching Framework.
His current employer, Derbyshire County Council, has agreed for him to work for up to 15 days as an Associate for Prospects4Sport as part of his continuous professional development.
