Leicester Fit & Active Buddies
£280,000 of funding raised for physical activity and food project in Leicester.
The Fit and Active Buddies (FAB) project started in Leicester in November 2003, initially using sport and physical activity to address health inequalities and helping people to get over any personal barriers to physical activity. Shortly afterwards the FAB team joined forces with the Leicestershire Nutrition and Dietetics Service to provide a wider approach and incorporate healthy eating.
The project aims to “tackle social exclusion and promote a change in Braunstone resident lifestyle habits through providing learning, physical fitness and healthy eating opportunities, and to have a positive impact on their health, well-being and future”.
It works by:
- helping residents who join the project to find out why they don’t exercise, remove their personal barriers and take up activities which will increase their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.
- encouraging residents to take part in activities – including learning opportunities, physical activity and healthy eating courses - with one-to-one support from project workers
- giving residents of different age, shape, size, ability, health, gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity the lots of opportunities to engage in physical activity and healthy eating
- showing people how they can progress through volunteering, learning, and work opportunities
- creating a culture that inspires and supports hard to reach participants to exceed their expectations of themselves
- capturing evidence of the impact of physical activity and healthy eating through individual GROW plans.
Prospects4Sport worked with Leicester City PCT, the FAB team and LNDS to identify how the project could continue to reach more people.
We put a number of funding bids together for the project so that it could carry on for another 3 years.
Our work resulted in the award of £280,000 for the project.
